Foundation 101: Color matching foundation for your skin tone

Raise your hand if you get a little overwhelmed by all the shades of foundation that are available today? Specially when you are out of foundation or you want to try a different brand but don't know which one to select. Fear no more! I am here to break it down for you.

First determine what is your undertone is: Neutral, cool or warm undertone? Please do not assume that if you are fair-skinned you are cool or if your complexion is dark you are warm. There are a few ways to determine your undertone,:

  • Look at your veins are they blue or green? If you answered green, you are most likely have warm undertones. If you answered blue veins, you have cool undertones.
  • Do you tan or do you burn if you layout at the beach? If you answered tan, you have warm undertones and if burn while out on the sun, you have cool undertones.
  • Another great way to determine your undertone, look at your forearm. What color do you see? I see yellow, you may see pink, orange or reddish tones. If you have yellow/golden then you are warm and if you see more of a pink then you are cool. If you have a combination of these then you are neutral and that is great news because it is much simple to match.

Now that we have determined your skins undertone we can move on to the next step.

Now time to select a share, but which one you say? If you are cool you want to select a shade that has redder or blue base. If you are warm you want to select a shade that has yellow or golden tones and if you are neutral you want to select a shade that best compliments your skin, you can go with a warmer tone to give a glow or a pink for a porcelain finish.

The best way to know if you selected the right shade is to test it. Take a sample size drop of the foundation and apply it right on your jawline. Does that color match your skin and neck? Does it blend perfectly and seamlessly? If so that is the one, you want to make sure it blends well downward to you neck because none whats to look like they have a mask on.

Now that you have determined your skin undertone that will help you select eyes shadow, hair dyes and colors that will complement your skin and make you look extra beautiful. Hope this was helpful, now go start testing some foundations.
